Fresher is better. Local is freshest of all…so “bestest” of all!

It is such a pleasure to work with local growers who grow specifically for us.  Here is a “flic” of Jake picking up produce he’s serving on our new Summer Menu.  He is at Green Angel Organic Gardens and it’s produce stand on Sandridge Rd., owned by Larkin Stentz, just a couple miles from the cafe.

Spring and Summer always seem to come late to the Northwest.  This year things are later than normal.  Vineyards have been waiting for a good bloom so that their grapes will mature before October begins to cool things down.  Our local green gardeners and farmers are planting for us, but watching things take longer to grow.  At least they haven’t had to worry about crops “bolting” to seed because of the extraordinary warm weather.  Still, we are now seeing some sweet greens and it sure is nice to have things grown specifically for our menu.

Jake works with Stockhouse Farm on Puget Island, WA, who delivers to us every Wednesday and Larkin Stentz of Green Angel Organic Gardens here on the peninsula (the video).  Fresh Rainbow Chard is doing well and on the menu as a Wilted Chard and Romaine Salad with Hard Boiled Egg and Pancetta Sherry Vinaigrette.

Announcing Our First Ever

Farmer’s Table Dinner

Imagine a Sunday supper with your favorite neighbor who happens to be a fabulous farmer. His chores are done and he has invited you to his table to enjoy the fruits of his labors. We are inviting you to that kind of evening. Loren and Caroline Jennings of Greyfields Farm on Puget Island will provide fresh produce from their neighbor’s farm, as well as their own natural lamb and beef, and discuss the qualities of their farm which make produce and the animals of Puget Island such a special treat to eat.  It all happens Sunday, June 27th at 5:00 pm.

There will be hors d’oeuvres including farm fresh deviled eggs from free range pastured chickens. Then you will sit down to a giant family style dinner and enjoy the mildest spring lamb you will have ever tasted served three different ways by Chef Jake. During the meal will talk about the uniqueness of the island’s agricultural qualities and what it brings to your plate and palate.

Loren raises cattle, pigs, ducks, chickens and lamb, naturally, on Puget Island, just a rocks throw from Cathlamet, WA. The animals run free and feed off the mildest of grasses and their meats taste like the pork and chicken beef we enjoyed as kid in the fifties (damn I wish that weren’t so long ago!). You can buy his products at the Friday Farmers Market which opens the first Friday of May on your way down to visit the coast, but you will only be able to sit down to dinner with him at this event. The price is $48 per person.  Seating is limited.  Reservations are necessary.  Make plans and call as soon as possible. Ph (360) 642-2323. – :) bw

The Kite Museum Is Giving Lessons This Weekend And Next.
For the next two Saturdays the Museum is giving free two line stunt kite flying lessons, for all interested, on the Bolstad approach to the beach.  The kids will learn faster and probably laugh at you as you learn, but it is fun.  Sure, you might not be this good instantly (the flyer is the owner of Prism Kites and a regular guest with us during Kite Festival in August).  But go ahead.  Take a chance.  This is the best beach in the world for kite flying and learning to fly.  It is why the International Kite Festival is held here each August.  It is why the above video was shot here.
We’ll even buy you a free dinner if you post pictures of yourself taking the lessons on the World Kite Museum’s Facebook page (or ours!).  Have some fun.  It is “Spring Break”!

Where To Watch For Whales!

YouTube Preview Image

In March North Head Lighthouse offers spectacular chances to see whales moving north to Alaskan waters for the summer.  Especially when the weather is like this.  Wednesday morning the skies were clear and the temperature approaching sixty degrees.  I knew it was a little early to expect to spot the whales in migration, but it was worth the walk just to check out the view.

Hope you like it.  Again, I apologize for the shaking camera.  Next time I remember to not wear the MBTs Cheri insists will strengthen my hips and legs and speed my recovery from my hip surgery.  They really make me bounce. – b

What If The President Recieved 1000 Copies Of Three Cups Of Tea?

What if…

YouTube Preview ImageHave you read Three Cups Of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliven Relin?  If not we can’t recommend a more interesting and enlighting read.  If you have read it, you might understand and be interested in this crazy idea we can’t shake, despite all that is happening in the world.

What if President Obama received one thousand copies of the book “Three Cups of Tea”?  What if he gave a copy to every person on his staff and the foreign service to read?

It is a simple idea: promote peace by building schools and increasing the promise of opportunity through education.  The book demonstrates what can be done.

We want fans of the book “Three Cups of Tea” to send a new or used copy of the book to the President with the inscription:

“Dear Mr. President, I found this book enlightening and inspirational and think you will, too. If you have read it, please share it with a member of your staff or the Foreign Service”.

Already required reading at the Pentagon, the book “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin is the account of how Mortenson worked to build schools for girls in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and in the process promote peace through education in the region.

If you want to participate, mail your used or new copy of the book with the above inscription, or something similar, with your signature to:

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Note: Please include your e-mail address

Then invite a friend to do so, too… and join our group on Facebook: ”Three Cups Of Tea For The President”. We are promoting what we call The Big Mail In event with a deadline of February 22nd, 2010.

FYI: On January 15th, 2010, Bill Moyers did a excellent program on Greg.  This is the link to the page where you can watch the video.
